The Associação Recanto São Francisco was founded in 1992 by the entrepreneur Oscar Brenninkmeijer. In order to establish an innovative project in social services, he bought land in a beautiful mountain area in the Municipality of Extrema (on the border of São Paulo and Minas Gerais) and, with the help of a group of volunteers, the installations of Recanto São Francisco were built.


The location was chosen because of its relative distance from the influences of the large urban centers and the breathtaking scenery of the region.

Nowadays Recanto São Francisco has the capacity to house more than 60 children and has expansion plans for the future. For the children that have become young adults, (over 18 years of age), it provides an option for further support in their growth to independence in one of their “Republicas” (student homes).
